Data has become both a strategic asset and a potentially crippling liability in the 21st century economy. As consumers grow increasingly concerned about the stewardship of their data, around the world policymakers, judiciaries, academics and advocates are questioning boundaries and considering risks, such as:

  • What is private information and what is not?
  • How should organizations explain what they're doing with data?
  • What should happen when data is stolen or misused?
  • In an era of globalization, how do we manage the diverse social and legal expectations?

These questions are urgent because they come at a time when the economy increasingly depends on consumer willingness to share personal information. Mr. Hughes will address these and other important issues based on his experience as the president and CEO of the world's largest association of privacy professionals, and his research as co-author of Privacy Law in Marketing, a continuously updated subscription-based CCH legal reference volume.

Mr. Hughes argues that a new, holistic ethos of data environmentalism is needed. He will discuss evidence that organizations are coping with growing tension between innovation, privacy and security. They are discovering that the use and protection of data has broad impacts on reputations and bottom lines.
